I am trying to install Alchemy on another computer and it's
asking me for a license key which I don't appear to have, where can I get one
from? If you are installing Alchemy for use with a single user
license then you don't need to enter a license key, simply delete what is typed
in the license text box and click the next button.
I have just received the latest disc for my Alchemy
database, how do I update the database on my system?
If you have
all of the images and data on a server or pc then you will have to replace the
following files on your computer with the ones on the disc: database file
(10***.ald) and the fdr, ndx, rid, rob, tid & tob (10***.fdr etc.) files
from within the 10*** folder. Then copy the dat and pro files from the DATA000
folder (within the 10***folder) into the DATA000 folder on the computer. Now
your Alchemy database should be fully up to date!
If you only keep the
database on your computer but load the images from the cd then all you need to
do is replace the 10***.ald file and the fdr, ndx, rid, rob, tib and tob files
in the 10*** folder with those from the disc.
I'm trying to load the latest Alchemy disc onto my computer
but I don't seem to see all of the information, where is it?
Alchemy writes discs in sessions and generally one session is
written per disc, however, sometimes if the last session is very small and
there is enough room on the disc then the last session will be written to the
same disc as the previous session. Some older cd-rom drives are unable to read
multi-session discs hence you will only be able to see the first session
written. If this is the case then you may be able to see both sessions on a
different PC. If you use a PC with a cd-rom drive that won't support
multi-session discs for your Alchemy database then let us know and in the
future if there is more than one session on a disc then we can copy these off
the disc and re-write the data to a new disc as one session.
How do I e-mail documents from
Alchemy?
If you use a MAPI compliant e-mail
application (such as Microsoft Outlook) then you can simply select the document
required in the Tree View and then from the file menu select "Send To" and
"Mail Recipient". Your applications message creation window will appear with an
icon representing the document to be sent.
If you are NOT using a MAPI
compliant e-mail application, for example Lotus Notes, then you will first have to
retrieve the document to your chosen destination and then attach it to your
e-mail as you would any other file. To retrieve a document from Alchemy firstly
right-click on the document required in the tree view pane and select "Retrieve
Files". In the pop up box specify the destination and file name for the
retrieved document (using the browse button if required). In the "What do you
wish to retrieve?" area, select the options required as follows:
|
Non-Image Files Image Files OCR
Files Profiles |
A PC Type
document (eg. a Word document) Scanned documents Text OCR version of a
scanned document Profile field information (as a text file) |
|
Once you have
retrieved the document you can attach it to an e-mail as you would any other
file.
I can only see the first page of a document
in Alchemy, where are the follow on documents?
If your documents
have been multipaged, when you click on a document in the tree view pane you
may only see the first page in the viewer pane in normal mode. Above the
displayed image is an image type toolbar, to view the follow on pages click on
the fifth icon from the left.
I want to use
Alchemy's search tool to look for a document but I can't remember the exact
title of the document, what do I do?
A "fuzzy" search will show
up results similar to what you have originally searched for, hopefully
including the document that you are after! To enable fuzzy searching, "Rank
search results" must first be checked under the "settings" tab on the search
box. When "Rank search results" is checked then the level of "fuzziness" can be
selected. This varies from "exact" (no fuzzy searching) to "fuzzy" which allows
the words to be 50% accurate.
Can you add
documents to a cd once it has been written to already?
As a
general rule we will only write to a cd-r once and as the disc is write
protected it cannot be written to again. For writing multiple sessions on a
disc we use cd-rws which can be written to many times (much like a floppy disk,
providing the disc has not been write
protected.

General
I've sent some
documents in for scanning/microfilm and I need a couple of pages back urgently,
what do I do?
Requests for work to be sent back can be made by
telephone (0118 9431443), fax (0118 9426631) or e-mail(bureau@archivems.co.uk). When
requesting documents we will need the following information: your name, your
company name and contact details and any relevant details pertaining to the
paperwork (eg. document number, which folder the document is in, date, etc.
Obviously these will depend on the type of paperwork you have sent in.) The
quickest way for us to get your paperwork back to you is by fax or e-mail,
though obviously if there is a large amount of work that you need back then it
can be collected/delivered. For scanning work we generally fax documents
if they are yet to be scanned and e-mail if they are already scanned. For
microfilm, paperwork is generally sent by fax.
